Spring onions, also known as spring onions, are less fresh than their adult relatives, as they have no protective peel. However, with the following methods, green onions remain fresh for much longer than if they are carelessly placed in the vegetable compartment.

What are spring onions?

The sturdy vegetables are allowed in the bed from March and can be sown throughout the summer. Spring-sprouted onions in late summer can be harvested the following spring. When grown in a sunny spot, the spring onions grow much faster than in shaded flowerbeds.

Keep the spring onions in the fridge

For the cold-resistant spring onions, the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator is the right place to store. If you want to store them for a few days before use, it is best to cut off most of the green leaves on the spring onions. Although these can be consumed, however, evaporate during storage a lot of water, making the spring onions are lax. Stored in this way, they remain fresh for up to five days - about twice as long as green onion.


Store the spring onions in a glass of water

When the young bulbs are pulled out of the soil during harvest, the roots remain on the plant. You can take advantage of this by placing your spring onions in a glass filled with a finger of water. The roots resume their work and supply the spring onions with water. As a result, they stay crisp for a long time. Be sure to change the water daily so the onions do not become foul.
With this method, you can even go so far that you only use the upper part of the spring onion and let the bottom thickened end with the roots in the water glass completely regrow within a few weeks. The spring onion is ready for a second harvest.

Freeze leek onions

In a tightly closed freezer in the *** freezer, green onions are stable for about half a year. Before freezing, wash the leek onions, remove withered leaves, cut off the roots and cut the vegetables into rings. If you use freezer bags, you should push out the air before closing.
Ideally, do not thaw the spring onions, but put them frozen in your dish to be cooked. Thawing destroys the cell structure of onions, making them muddy.
