It actually exists, the perennial pumpkin seed. Not very tasty, yet so highly decorative that the prairie pumpkin is worth an increase. So use the long foothills for a vegetative propagation by division.

So the foothills rooted in a jiffy

The prairie pumpkin dances out of line in the large family of cucurbitaceae. With a tap root up to 150 cm long, it anchors deep in the ground. Thanks to the numerous foothills, it offers plenty of material in the same move to increase the plant vegetatively. Hobby gardeners who do not want to deal with a sowing, therefore, have the choice here.

Both cut surfaces are immediately treated with charcoal ash to protect them from attack by fungal spores or pests. More than half of a foothill should not be removed. If you want more root cuttings, dig out another specimen.

Throughout the winter into the frost-free quarter

The prepared root cuttings are planted without much delay, so that they begin quickly with the rooting.

The small plants spend the winter in the frost-free room or in the cold frame. During this time they receive only enough water that the small squash plants do not dry up. If two or three pairs of leaves develop in the spring, plant the young pumpkins in the appropriate location. From this point on, they are cared for, like an adult cucurbit.

Should you miss the fall date to multiply a prairie pumpkin by division, this is not a drama. Once the soil has thawed in the spring, the procedure can also be performed. In this case, the root cuttings may be planted immediately at the intended place in the bed or tub.
