Sow or stick garlic? - It's definitely easy

When gardening garlic hobby gardeners have easy game. It already starts with the sowing of the seeds. Since they like to take their time until they germinate, impatient garlic breeders prefer to stick their toes. This is how it works.

Sowing garlic seeds. Which seeds?

Not so easy to get garlic seeds. In the retail trade they are available every year only for a few weeks in the fall. That's because they do not last long, because they have little in common with seeds in the traditional sense.

If there is talk of garlic seeds, they are actually meant to be small bulbs. Following the white or pink flowering, they develop in cylindrical sheaths. Garlic seeds are purple and of a very firm consistency.

If hobby gardeners with their own garlic breeding are among your friends, there are best prospects for fresh seeds. The bulb onions are cut out of the cylinder cap with a sharp knife.

Dates for sowing are in spring and autumn

For sowing, choose a sunny place that is both warm and as protected as possible. The soil is ideally loose, humic, nutrient-rich and not too dry. Sown is garlic in February or October.

The very tightly structured garlic seeds take up to 1 year longer to mature. If that's not fast enough, put fresh garlic toes instead. These are larger than seeds and require a planting depth of 5-7 cm.

Sow the garlic properly in the planter

Commercially available vegetable soil serves as a suitable substrate in the bucket or flower box. In such a narrow space there is a risk of waterlogging. Drain on the floor using pebbles, grit, perlite or crushed potsherds.

If you have a weed fleece on hand, spread it over the drainage so that it does not become blocked by the substrate. Otherwise there are no differences to the sowing of garlic in the bed.

Tips & Tricks

Sow garlic between tomatoes, carrots, strawberries or cucumbers. The effluent aroma effectively protects the plant neighbor from pests and diseases.
