Scaring clover
While some gardeners appreciate the white or red-flowering clover as a component in the lawn or even as lawn replacement, others can not do much with the easy-care "troublemaker". While clover has to be weeded in the bed by hand, the scarifier can be used when there are clover particles in the lawn.
Use the clover as green manure and intermediate sowing
Since the clover varieties that are used agriculturally because of their abundance of proteins, such as red and white clover, have special properties, they are often used as intermediate sowing in late summer and as green manure. After all, this has the following effects:
To ensure that winter hardy clover species such as red and white clover can decompose in time before the next crop, they must be mulched before winter. On a flat surface, a scarifier can be used to save time and labor.
Fighting clover in the lawn with the scarifier
The scarifier makes sure that the clover plants along with the roots are pulled out of the ground on lawns that are infiltrated with clover. Since clover not only by sowing, but also vegetatively propagated, regular clover nests are often formed in the lawn. Although individual clover nests can also be cut out by hand, the gaps can be filled with soil and lawn seeds. With a strong mixing with clover, however, only a distance with a powerful scarifier comes into question. The torn plants can be disposed of on the compost heap as long as they are not already faded specimens with adherent seeds.
Where do you get a scarifier from
Depending on the soil and location conditions in the garden, a scarifier is needed a maximum of once or twice a year. Therefore, the purchase and maintenance of such a device is not worthwhile for every hobby gardener. However, well-maintained scarifiers can usually be hired from gardeners or horticultural clubs and neighbors.
Tips
In addition to scarifying, action should be taken to strengthen the grass in its growth. Provide adequate irrigation and targeted fertilizer selection to positively affect grass growth relative to the clover. In the case of heavy clover in the lawn, the temporary covering of the surface with a plastic film may also bring about the desired success instead of scarifying, since the grass will recover more easily from this than the clover.
