Refining kiwi requires skill
If you want to propagate kiwis yourself, you usually do it by cuttings or sinkers. The kiwis available in the specialized trade are finished, d. H. from the combination of two plant parts - a base with a precious rice - emerged.
During refining, a new tree with the desired properties is created from two starting plants. The goal is to obtain a single-variety progeny of the desired variety. The base and the precious rice should come from the same plant or a related species. There are several ways to refine kiwi stalks:
Okulate at the end of the summer
In August, when the bark is well dissolved, a bud (the so-called eye) is cut out of the one kiwi plant and inserted into the kiwi plant to be refined. The cut should be done with a sharp eyepiece. The bud is cut out with a piece of bark together. The eye grows within a relatively short time of one to two weeks.
Copulating the beginning of winter
For copulation, a precious rice is needed, which is about as strong as the branch, with which it connects later. The shrubs are cut off from the shrub of the desired variety between December and January, keeping them cool, moist and dark. At the end of February, the two diagonally cut branches are joined together by pressing the cut surfaces together, wrapping the piece with bast and sealing it with tree wax.
Grafting in the spring
In April-May you can graft the harvested precious rice on the previously cut base. For this purpose, cut the bark of the base, put the scion behind the bark and connect the place. In this way, one can graft a rice obtained from the female kiwi onto the self-seeded kiwi plant whose sex is unknown.
Tips & Tricks
More than half of the self-bred seedlings are male. Often even the plants bought as female turn out to be male.
