Variety of kiwi plants
The commercially available kiwifruit are usually part of the New Zealand-grown Heyward. It is characterized by good taste and long shelf life. These and other varieties can also thrive here in Germany.

Kiwi is a berry fruit of the Chinese ray stingray (Actinidia chinensis). The fruits are about 6-8 cm tall, have a uniformly oval shape and greenish brown colored, hairy, quite thin shell. Most kiwis come to us from New Zealand. The Zespri brand is the most abundant in the fruit shelves of supermarkets.
Two types of fruits are sold year-round in the trade, which are very similar in size, color and taste: Actinidia deliciosa (kiwis with green pulp) and Actinidia chinensis (kiwis with golden yellow pulp). If you like it sour-zesty, grab the green kiwi. For those who prefer sweeter, the gold kiwis are the better choice.
Variety of plants
Kiwi plants are dioecious climbers with large, hairy leaves and yellowish-white flowers. The kiwi smoke is hardy and likes to worm its long shoots around wires, rods and other trellises. In wind-protected, warm locations he reaches heights of growth of 10-20 meters. Even under Central European conditions, robust varieties of the climbing exotic can be successfully cultivated.
Large fruit varieties
In the wine growing areas and areas with mild winters can be achieved with the standard variety Heyward good yields. Other more or less frost resistant varieties are also available in specialty stores, with a distinction between male and female species:
Mini Kiwis
For regions with a harsh climate, the frost-resistant mini-kiwis (Actinidia arguta or Actinidia kolomikta) are best suited. These have about 2-4 cm large fruits with a smooth shell, which is eaten with. In terms of taste, the mini-kiwis are no match for the big ones. In addition, the fruits and leaves colored in red or purple offer a colorful sight in the garden.
Tips & Tricks
If you do not have enough space for several kiwi plants, you can still harvest kiwis in your own garden thanks to the self-fertile varieties Jenny or Issai.
