Soil care with bark mulch - makes sense with cherry laurel?
Mulch layers suppress the growth of weeds and keep the soil moist. As a substitute product for a warming leaf or grass layer is chopped bark, a waste product of forestry.
Bark mulch: protective blanket for the earth
Bark mulch suppresses weeds very well and blends visually perfectly into the natural picture of the garden. However, the material also has disadvantages in that it extracts nitrogen from the soil and acidifies it by rotting. However, you can compensate for nitrogen loss by fertilizing, for example with horn shavings.
How quickly the bark mulch rotted depends on the grain: the larger the pieces, the slower they decompose. To effectively suppress the weeds, you should apply a mulch layer at least five to seven centimeters thick. Mulch once a year to make up for the degraded volume of the bark mulch layer.
Grass clippings as an alternative mulching material
Some experts recommend not to mulle young plants with bark mulch. Use dried grass clippings instead. This mulch layer protects the soil from the weather and supplies the cherry laurel with nutrients through the rotting of the material.
Tips & Tricks
Mix the mulch with leaves of comfrey or nettle. The valuable ingredients of the plants naturally strengthen the cherry laurel during mulching.
