The cherry laurel: an attractive and easy-care bonsai
Because of its deep green, glossy leaves, the evergreen cherry laurel is a particularly popular bonsai. Due to the numerous design options from tightly upright to attractive cascade form, it represents an interesting challenge for bonsai friends.
Location
The cherry laurel should be cared for as free-range bonsai. Ideal are sunny and bright locations. Protect the evergreen bonsai from winds as it evaporates a lot of water over the large leaf area.
water requirements
Water the bonsai whenever the soil feels dry. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs, as the cherry laurel bonsai tends to root rot.
Fertilize
Fertilize the small tree from spring to September at intervals of two weeks. Both fertilizer cones for bonsai and bonsai liquid fertilizers are suitable.
cut
Make thicker twigs in February or March. You can cut reductions in half in the spring. In June, you can make a total leaf incision with a healthy and vigilantly awake bonsai. During the summer, regularly illuminate the crown so that enough light can penetrate into the interior of the small tree.
wires
This is necessary primarily for older branches. You can wire the tree throughout the year.
repotting
Repotting is only necessary after three to four years. Shorten the root system very carefully and remove the used substrate between the remaining roots. Put the laurel cherry in commercial bonsai soil, which you mix with about a third of akadama soil.
wintering
In mild regions, this bonsai is allowed to hibernate outdoors in a sheltered corner. Alternatively, you can maintain the laurel cherry during the cold season in a bright room at temperatures of five to ten degrees.
Tips & Tricks
Since the laurel cherry is poisonous and can also cause skin irritation, you should wear gloves during all work.
