Why the cherry tree is left without cherries
If you have not just planted a cherry tree because of its spectacular flowers, you expect after the lush flowering with a rich yield. If this leaves, one asks every gardener what can be done to bring the cherry tree to fruit in the next garden year.
That the cherry tree is left without cherries, can have different causes. It helps to make the following considerations in this order:
Yield ripe of the cherry trees
As a rule, one- to two-year cherry trees are offered by specialist retailers. In the first 2-3 years after planting, you can hardly count on any significant yield. During this time, the shoots grow and the crown framework is built up by the targeted cutting measures. Both sweet and sour cherries start wearing from about the 5th year. In order to maintain the yield and to secure, you should cut out the removed fruit wood regularly in most sour cherry varieties.
Problems with fertilization
If the cherry tree has formed abundant flowers in spring and little or no fruit has formed from it, this may indicate the lack of fertilization. For fruit development from the flower it is necessary that the seed of the female flower is pollinated with pollen of the male flower.
In the self-pollinated cherry varieties, it is sufficient if the male and female fertilizing organs of the same tree fertilize each other. For most cherry trees, a suitable near-pollinator will have a beneficial effect on the fertilization process. Insects, especially bees, play an important role because they are responsible for pollen transport.
Tips & Tricks
In a wet or cold spring, there is sometimes no sufficient bee flight and thus no fertilization. In this case, one only needs to hope that the next spring brings better bee weather.
