The cover with fir or spruce can be removed already in March, the accumulated soil still remains. Depending on the climatic zone, the piling up takes place in milder regions either with the hazelnut blossom or, if you live in a climatically rougher area, together with the forsythia blossom. But you can also look after the shoot already done: If the rose already has several new shoots of about 10 centimeters in length, you can pile it down.
When roses need a longer protection
In the process, roses planted in autumn and older (and thus established at their location) may be exempted from their winter protection sooner than specimens planted or bare in the spring.In the case of spring plantings, the rule is that they have to remain accumulated for at least four weeks. The measure is not so much the protection against the cold, but should rather protect the plant from dehydration.
Leaf mulch is not suitable as winter protection for roses
Many hobby gardeners use foliage to protect the roses from winter frost. Although it is indeed nice and warm under such a mulch (which usually attracts mice), but there also mushroom spores, in particular the Sternrußtaus also hibernate well. For this reason, roses should not be covered with deciduous mulch, but instead as possible with fir-tree sprigs. Fichtenreisig is also suitable, but the protection hereby does not last too long: the branches lose their needles quite fast.
The further rose care in spring

In addition, the demanding plants must be cut back and fertilized in early spring, so that the new budding is vigorous and a rich flowering is expected. The spring cut is not the same for every rose, but is dependent on the variety - some rose needs a stronger pruning, while others only need to be taken care of. The best way to start the year is with organic fertilizer, and if you pile your roses with compost and / or manure, spread it thoroughly in the bed and work it into the soil. Fertilization must be carried out early, since the active ingredients from organic fertilizer will be available to the plant after some time.
