Ginger as a flowering plant and for consumption multiply

The ginger is not only a very tasty and versatile spice, but also a thankful flowering plant. The cultivation of ginger and its propagation are relatively unproblematic even from the commercial ginger rolls possible.

Location and season for the cultivation of ginger

Ginger comes from the tropical regions of Asia and should therefore be cultivated in a warm location. From March, the ginger rolls can be pulled outdoors in a bucket with humus soil. In a sunny and sheltered location, as on a terrace, the root rhizome grows below the ground to a stately size by the autumn. In about October and November, the leaves of the ginger turn yellow, then you can dig up the ginger rolls and use them for consumption or multiplication.

The winter in the cellar

Unlike other potted plants, ginger should not only be brought into the house before the frost, but its tubers should also be dug out of the ground. This prevents mold that could easily occur if the soil moisture is too high. Clean the tubers with a dry cloth and overwinter them in a well ventilated and dark basement room.

Promote the sprouting of ginger in spring

In spring, you can let the ginger tubers harvested in autumn in a bucket drive out again. Divide the ginger tubers by a simple breakup, but pay attention to a minimum size of each piece at least the size of a dice. Since the ginger needs a lot of moisture and warmth in the budding phase, you can also cover it with a plastic film until the first shoot tips appear above the earth's surface.

The sowing of ginger

When propagating the commercially available Gewürzingwers sowing for cultivation usually plays no role. In general, it is difficult in our latitudes due to the winter vegetation break to get the tropical ginger to training germinable seeds. However, commercially available varieties of seeds are available which are either special subspecies of the ginger family or, due to similar use in the kitchen, ginger plant species.

Tips & Tricks

At a close look, you can sometimes spot the buds of the shoot on the ginger rolls. Divide the ginger rolls according to the visible bud tips to achieve a good propagation result.
