Chestnuts shrink when they dry

Store chestnuts - not always easy, but quite feasible

The chestnuts fall down from the tree shining brown in autumn. Especially children are fascinated by them, and collect them diligently. When crafting the horse chestnut may play a major role, chestnuts are even edible. Proper storage prolongs the joyful chestnut season.

The durability of horse chestnuts

Chestnuts are fun. Again and again under the chestnut tree a magnificent specimen is discovered, which simply has to walk in the basket. That's when a big crowd comes together.

However beautiful and tempting they look, horse chestnuts are not edible for us humans. Local wildlife, on the other hand, gets it very well. Surrendering excess chestnuts to a nearby zoo is the best solution because they can not be stored at home for a long time.

Keep the horse chestnuts

If the crafting campaign can not start right away, the chestnuts must be kept fresh for a few days. This is best done in a cool, dry and airy place where they are spread on cardboard. At room temperature, the chestnuts would quickly shrink and harden.

Dried chestnuts, for example, in a craft work, although longer, but do not look so impressive.

Store chestnuts properly

For horse chestnuts it is all about and a beautiful appearance, chestnuts have to remain edible and taste good. If the amount can not be consumed quickly, they must spend the waiting time in a suitable location.

Store in the room only for a few days

At normal room temperature, chestnuts only last a few days. That is acceptable, as soon as they are consumed. Offer them the coolest place you have available. This will extend your freshness for another day.

Store in the fridge

Put the chestnuts in a plastic bag. Stand several holes in the bag to allow air exchange. Put the chestnuts in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. Regularly check the contents so that spoiled chestnuts are quickly sorted out.

Freezing offers the longest shelf life

Sweet chestnuts can be frozen raw, including the shell. If used later as a food ingredient, cooking in advance makes sense. The chestnuts are cooked for about 10 minutes and can be peeled after cooling and then freeze well packed.
