Potatoes on balconies - How it works with the potato cultivation in the pot
The farmer orders the potato field, the garden owner puts on a potato. And the balcony owner? He grows his potatoes in a bucket or bucket. Sounds unusual at first, but succeeds without much effort.

Almost every balcony or roof terrace has a sheltered location with a few hours of sunlight - the best prerequisite for potato cultivation on the balcony. Join in:

From the end of March you can sow new potatoes and from mid-April to mid-May the mid-early and late varieties. To protect you from late night frosts, cover the potatoes with a blanket.
This is how the plants work in the bucket
First you make sure that the bottom of your vessel has a drain hole and drill it in if necessary. In addition, fill a 10 cm high layer of gravel for drainage. This is important so that the tubers do not rot in wet soil.
You cover the drainage layer about 15 cm high with earth. Ideally, you have mixed in mature compost or horn shavings or used a compost soil mixture. It is also possible to add sand to loosen the soil.
Put 1 to 2 pregerminated seed potatoes on the ground. Then you give back earth, so that the tubers are well covered and pours everything carefully.
After some time, the first green tips will look up. Are these about 10 cm high, you cover them again with soil. You repeat this until the edge of your vessel is reached.
A small margin should stay on top so that the poured earth does not overflow. By layering the potato plant forms its tubers in different levels over each other.
Once a week, it is time to water, more often during prolonged drought. Additional fertilizer is not needed by the plant.
After about 100 days, the first potatoes are ready for harvest. Until then, enjoy the potato with its flowers. When the herb starts to wither, the potatoes are ripe and you can harvest in layers.
