Robust Japanese maple has little tendency for disease
Whether it be Japanese Japanese Maple, Japanese Maple or Golden Maple, all these Japanese maples are very popular not only for their filigree appearance and beautiful autumn color. The exotic woody plants are also easy to maintain, can be wonderfully cultivated in pots and are also considered to be hardy in Central European climes. Furthermore, Japanese Maple is quite robust and has little tendency to diseases or fungal attack.
Often wrong location and / or care is to blame
If your Japanese Maple grows poorly, has brown and / or dry leaves or shows clear signs of fungal or pest infestation, so usually put a little appropriate location and / or care behind it. With regard to the location, a warm, sunny and, above all, sheltered place should be taken into account - in particular wind and drafts are not tolerated by the wood. Also waterlogging can be dangerous to the tree, which is why the plant substrate should be thoroughly loosened before planting. At best, plant the Japanese maple in a slightly sloping place.
Deadly Verticillium Withering Threat
If the foliage and branches wither away for no apparent reason, the dreaded Verticillium wilt can be behind it. It is a contagious and highly dangerous disease caused by fungi of the genus Verticillium and mainly affecting the maples. No herb (or fungicide) has grown against Verticillium wilt so far, and infested plants can only be rescued in rare cases. If the infestation is not too strong, you can prune the tree - while throwing trimmed plant parts in the household waste and never on the compost! - dig out and place in a bucket with fresh substrate.
Other fungal diseases
Especially in rainy summers as well as due to wrong pouring can occur in Japanahornen mildew. In this fungal disease leaves and shoots cover with a greyish white, greasy mushroom carpet. The pathogen is transmitted through the water, which is why Japanese Maple should never be poured from above. Mildew can be successfully controlled by spraying with a milk-water mixture or a fungicide.
Tips
Never plant a maple in a location where Verticillium wilting has occurred - even if the soil has already been replaced at this location!
