Why does the hydrangea get yellow leaves?
If the foliage of the hydrangea turns yellow, the plant usually lacks important nutrients. We explain what causes are responsible and how you can remedy them quickly.
nitrogen deficiency
When there is a lack of nitrogen, most of the leaves turn yellow. At first, only the older leaves in the lower part of the hydrangea are affected, only later does the discolored foliage discolour. As a result, the flowers can also wither away.

Fertilize the hydrangea with a nitrogen fertilizer from the garden trade. Please note the dosage indicated on the package and do not over-hydrate the hydrangea. Too much nitrogen can cause plant damage.
chlorosis
Iron deficiency usually occurs in conjunction with the acidic soils preferred by the hydrangea. The younger to middle-aged leaves are affected first. They show a yellow-green to lemon-yellow discoloration. The leaf veins are sharply demarcated and dark green.

Always fertilize the hydrangea with a special iron fertilizer. If iron deficiency still shows, you can use a pure egg fertilizer.

Fertilizer is poisonous, so you should always wear protective clothing.
pH of the soil
So that red hydrangeas retain their bright flower color, the soil must have a relatively high pH. This can lead to the plant no longer being able to absorb iron in sufficient quantities. If yellow leaves appear on a red hydrangea, you should correct the pH. Well suited are organic fertilizers such as compost.

In autumn yellow discolored foliage is normal due to the natural vegetation cycle. The hydrangea belongs to the deciduous plants, in which the leaves first turn yellow in autumn and then fall off by itself.
