If hydrangeas are planted in the right location, they are relatively easy to care for and grow over the years into dense, flowering and large shrubs. Varieties such as the peasant hydrangea, plate hydrangea or climbing hydrangea get along without cutting and reach a considerable size.

If the hydrangea is not regularly cut back, it will reach a size of at least two meters. Many varieties are therefore ideal as a flowering, informal hedge plant. The hydrangea hedge requires less care than many other plantings and sets romantic accents by the numerous large flower balls. You hardly need to cut this green screen, unlike other hedges.All you have to do is break out the faded umbels and pour the water-hungry hydrangea if necessary.
The climbing hydrangea wants to go high
Particularly large is the climbing hydrangea, which belongs to the group of self-climbers and greened without trellis fences, trees or bare house walls. Shadow-tolerant, this Hydrangea thrives well both in partial shade and in full shade. Due to its gnarled growth and attractive autumn coloring, a large climbing hydrangea sets attractive garden accents all year round. It adorns from June with beautiful white border flowers, which stand out beautifully from the shiny dark green foliage. The rather flat umbels are very large and smell pleasantly sweet. The climbing hydrangea can grow up to seven meters in height.
What to do if the hydrangea has become too big?
If the hydrangea has grown too large, they can greatly reduce the shrub and thereby rejuvenate. However, the Hydrangea does not bloom in the year of the pruning, as you will inevitably have to remove the flower buds.
Alternatively, you can cut an overgrown hydrangea in stages and cut back only a portion of the old branches to about 50 centimeters. As a result, the bush is rejuvenated, but you do not have to do without the attractive floral decoration.
Tips & Tricks
Since the climbing hydrangea is very large, it can get a significant weight. Therefore, it is advisable, despite the numerous attachment roots, to provide a supportive climbing aid that carries the weight of the hydrangea.
