Apply horned violets - less is more!
For many plants, regular fertilizer administration is an important part of the care. But what about horny violets? Do hornbills need a lot of fertilizer? And which fertilizers are suitable?
What is the nutrient requirement of horned violets?
Horny violets have a low to medium nutritional requirement. For this reason, they do not have to be forcibly, regularly and extensively fertilized. Only when they are no longer floriferous, a fertilizer is required to regain vitality.
Too much fertilizer hurts
Much does not always help a lot. With horned violets you should fertilize sparingly. Too high a fertilizer supply causes these low perennials to grow strongly. The shoots are too long and when the next storm or rainfall is pending, there is a risk that the shoots bend. As soon as the shoots grow too high, you should stop the fertilizer feed immediately!
Suitable fertilizers for horned violets
For horny violets both organic and mineral fertilizers are suitable. With mineral fertilizers you can choose conventional products from the hardware store or garden center. Of organic fertilizers are particularly suitable:
For example, if you plan to use the flowers of the hornbeams as a decoration for desserts, to give them in salads or to eat them elsewhere, you should refrain from using mineral fertilizers. Remember: Small regular nutrient supplements are better than too much at once.
Best time to fertilize
Horned violets in the bed should be fertilized in spring. Until the end of the flowering period, some fertilizer can be added to the root area again and again. However, fertilization per year is usually enough for perennial horned violets.
The exception: horn violet in the pot
A big exception are horn violets, which are in the pot, for example, on the balcony. After planting, the potting soil is sufficient for a few weeks. But then fertilization is announced. It should be used a liquid fertilizer, which is mixed into the irrigation water.
Tips & Tricks
Good idea: Instead of fertilizing regularly, you should rather mulch the root area. So you kill 3 birds with one stone. Nutrient supply is ensured, the water evaporates more slowly (less watering) and the mulch layer protects against heavy frost.
