Small types of water lily feel well in the tub

How to cultivate the water lily in the bucket!

They are so beautiful with their floating stars! But a private garden pond is a nuisance? No problem, because water lilies can also be cultivated in the bucket. How it works? Continue reading!

Choose weak-growing water lilies

Only low-growth, small varieties are suitable for the bucket or vascular culture. This includes, for example, the dwarf water lily. Here are a few varieties that have proven to be well suited for the tub culture:

Find suitable vessels and a location

Only vessels that are watertight are suitable as vessels. So you can opt for a bricklayer bucket from the hardware store, a glass bowl, a ceramic bowl, a plastic pot or an open wine barrel. Even window boxes are suitable, insofar as they are waterproof.

When choosing a location, be sure to choose a sunny to partially shaded spot. A place in the blazing sun is less recommendable. In it, the water heats up too fast and too strong. That harms the water lilies. Whether on the balcony, the terrace, in the garden or at the house entrance - everywhere can find a pases cookies.

The planting itself - how are you?

Next, clean the vessel. Then fill a 10 to 15 cm thick layer of sand into it.Now the plant is set in the middle in the sand. Then fill up with water (usually a water depth of 15 to 30 cm is sufficient) and distribute fertilizer cones. Completed is the planting!

Aspects in the care

All water lily species are relatively easy to care for. They should be fertilized only moderately in the vessel. It can quickly lead to over-fertilization, which harms the plant. In winter, it is important to overwinter the plant. A dark, cool but frost-free room (eg basement) is the right choice.

Tips

Check your water lilies regularly for diseases and pests and clean the water from algae!
