Hops multiply - Tips for propagation!

Hops are a popular climber that produces not only fruits, but also shoots that can be eaten like asparagus. Propagation is not easy and does not always succeed. What you need to know if you want to multiply hops yourself.

Previous article The hop harvest - when and how do you harvest hops?

The methods for the propagation of hops

Sowing is not recommended, as it is not certain whether female or male offspring develop. Male plants are undesirable because they do not develop fruits with the salutary and spicy ingredients.

Sow hops

The seeds must be stratified. In the spring, they are sown in seedling filled boxes and covered only slightly. The box must not be in direct sunlight. The seeds must be kept moist but not wet.

Hops over cuttings or cuttings multiply

When cutting the hops in the spring a lot of shoots fall. Instead of disposing of it, put it in loose ground the same day. Some of the cuts are rooted if kept sufficiently moist.

To cut cuttings from cuttings, cut only slightly woody shoots of about eight centimeters in length from February to May. Remove the lower leaves and place the cuttings in small pots with potting soil or swollen peat.

Cover the pot with a plastic bag to keep the humidity level. Place it in a warm, not too sunny place until it sprouts for the first time.

Sharing roots or cutting root cuttings

In commercial cultivation, hops are often propagated through rooting or root cuttings. For this, the root ball must be partially removed from the ground. Only older plants are suitable for this.

The root ball is divided and the desired locations implanted. Root cuttings pull in the pot as well as shoot cuttings.

In the case of this form of propagation, it is guaranteed that a plant identical with the mother plant will have the same characteristics and above all the same sex.

Tips

In commercial hops, the varieties play an important role in propagation. Only then do plants develop with high-quality aroma, which gives the beer the right spice. The varieties do not play a major role in their exclusive use as ornamental and climbing plants.
