In March, the raised beds begin work
Prepare the raised bed for spring
Finally the time has come: The sun and the first tentatively warming rays on the earth, snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and other early bloomers stick their heads out of the ground and announce the approaching spring. Now it's time again to prepare the garden - and thus the raised bed - for planting.
Optimal preparation already takes place in autumn
The optimum preparation for the new planting season, especially for vegetable raised beds, already began in the previous autumn. This is especially true if it is a compost raised bed. This has to be filled continuously, because it sinks strongly during the rotting process over the months. For this reason, the best thing to do in autumn is:
Spring work in the raised bed
So prepared, let the raised bed rest until March. As soon as it gets warmer, remove the covering layer of twigs and / or mulch and any weeds that may have grown in the raised bed. Now fill a fresh layer of ripe, fine compost or a good potting soil. You can mix these with horn shavings and so enrich with nutrients. This layer should be at least 15 to 20 inches thick. If the raised bed is much more slumped, this plant layer can also be stronger.
Which vegetables you can already put into the bed
Afterwards, you can already start planting the raised bed: With a cold frame or greenhouse attachment, the first plantings of early, frost-resistant vegetables are already possible in February. These include, for example, early radishes, carrots, parsnips and early leafy vegetables and salads such as spinach and some pickles. When choosing the variety, pay attention to the times: The seeds should already be sowed outdoors between February and March and thus be insensitive to frost.
Tips
Water the raised bed several times in the autumn so that the freshly filled waste is sludged and composted faster. In addition, watering ensures that any voids are closed.
