In the instructions for the construction of raised beds is often read from a lining of the bed with foil. The purpose of this is to protect the wood from moisture and thus help the bed to live longer. However, not all slides are suitable for it.
Damp wood rots quickly
The substrate in a raised bed should always be as moist as possible and should not dry out. Wood, on the other hand, should never come into contact with damp soil, otherwise it will rot quickly. Therefore, you should always set up such a bed so that the bottom edge can dry quickly after a downpour. Ideally, your raised bed has a plastic or metal profile to protect it from soil moisture so that the timbers do not even come into contact with the floor. If this is not the case, you can also place the flower box on a series of plates or stones. In contrast, the inner walls of the raised bed protect you with a sturdy foil.
Which films are suitable for lining a raised bed
Water-permeable fabrics such as fleece are not suitable as a bedding lining because here the protection against moisture is completely lacking. Suitable for this are rubber, PE and PU films, which are normally used for pond construction. Above all pond liner, which has to keep large quantities, is best suited for this purpose: it is very robust, tear-resistant, completely impermeable to water and rot-resistant. If you want to use remaining parts of the pond construction, the individual webs should overlap at the seams by a good ten centimeters. Also specially made for the construction of a raised bed nubb film can be used. This has the advantage that it is - unlike conventional pond liner - free of harmful plasticizers. In addition, the bubble wrap of the drainage, since here excess water is discharged along the Beetwände.
Raised beds that get along completely without foil
The lining of the raised bed with foil has the sole purpose of protecting the wooden bedframe from moisture damage. Of course, such a protective measure is not necessary for all raised beds: beds made of high-quality aluminum, Corten steel or stone, for example, generally require no additional lining, since these materials are more or less resistant to moisture. Even plastic would basically need no lining, here attaching a (harmless) film, however, makes sense for other reasons. Plastic often releases harmful substances to the substrate so that a film is interposed to protect it.
Layer the raised bed with foil - this is how it is done
The lining of the raised bed with foil succeeds quite uncomplicated: It is best to simply fold the foil over the edge and fasten it with a cover board. But you can also festtackern on the inner edge with a fabric tape and large, stainless brackets or fasten with roofing nails. The attachment of a fabric tape is useful because it can prevent the tearing of the film. Another attachment of the film is not necessary. It can therefore hang loose loose in the bed, but should at least reach down to the ground.
Tips
The wood of the raised bed must not be damp when applying the foil. Therefore, after rainy weather, allow the wood to dry well for at least one day before sealing it with foil.
