To build a raised bed out of field stones
A raised bed of stone has many advantages over a wooden one. For example, stone raised beds have an almost unlimited lifespan and blend visually harmoniously into a naturally designed garden. But they can be - once they are installed - not easy to implement, also, the acquisition and construction costs are quite high. These can be lowered, however, if you use field stones.
Collect yourself instead of buying expensive
In many regions of Germany, in the past centuries fieldstones were often used for the construction of residential buildings or even churches - these buildings are still unshakeable and offer a fascinatingly rustic sight. Fieldstones come in many sizes, shapes and colors on every field - you just have to bother and collect them. Before you ask the farmer, whether they are allowed to collect stones on his land. Probably this will be rather glad that you take away the laborious work of collecting stones - the big chunks obstruct the field work.
Also field stones are very heavy
In this way, you can get beautiful natural stones for free, but they also have to be taken home somehow. Bulk stones in large quantities reach a very high weight, so you have to drive off with a suitable van - the vehicle must be designed for larger loads, your own family carriage, however, will not be enough. Also make sure that you have help - to carry stones alone is more than tiring in the long run.
Drywall vs. mortared wall
Fieldstones can be used as well as purchased natural stones as well: they can be installed in both dry and mortared walls. Dry stone walls should be maximally 60 to 80 centimeters high and for stability reasons in the intermediate spaces between the individual stones with filling material secured. You can also fill the joints with soil and plant, then the result looks very natural. Mortared walls should have a solid, possibly concrete foundation and possibly even a concrete formwork with reinforcing iron on the inside - otherwise expresses the weight of the stones to the outside. For a drywall, however, usually a gravel or gravel bed is sufficient as a foundation.
Tips
Masonry high stone walls made of field stones are ideal for building a raised bed directly on a slope. But also as a filling of gabions field stones are very good.
