When is the harvest time of the hazelnuts?
Autumn is the time of the hazelnut harvest. Now the delicious nuts turn brown and fall to the ground when they are ripe. Tips for harvesting and storing hazelnuts.
When does the harvest time begin?
The harvest season starts in September or October, depending on the weather.
Hazelnuts are ripe when they have their typical brown color and fall to the ground by themselves. Do not pick the nuts, but be patient until they lie on the floor.
If you can not wait for the time, shake the branches of the hazelnut tree, then drop the ripe nuts.
Dry after harvesting
In order for the nuts to be stored well, they must be dried. Choose only solid nuts in the shell. The shell must not be cracked, cracked or perforated.
Hazelnuts with damaged peel consume immediately. They taste best when roasted nuts are roasted in the oven.
Squirrels are often faster
Squirrels and magpies love hazelnuts, even if they are not quite ripe. You pick the green nuts directly from the hazelnut shrub.
Carrying hazelnut tree or hazelnut hedge many nuts, that's no problem. If only a few fruits hang on the tree, stretch a firm net over it.
