The dogwood (Cornus) is a shrub or small tree - some species grow creeping and are therefore suitable as ground cover - and is considered not only extremely easy to care, but also very attractive. A magnificent eye-catcher are not only the flowers, but also the often colored bark and the lush foliage. Particularly popular are the different types of flower dogwood.
Dogwood blossoms are usually white
Most dogwood species have white flowers that stand together in doldigen, paniculate or flower-shaped inflorescences. The flowers consist of four sepals entwined with the ovary as well as four petals. Some dogwoods also form yellow (Cornelian) or slightly pink (Red-flower dogwood, Rubra ') flowers, only the rarely seen in our country, the Swedish dogwood (Cornus suecica) flowers dark purple. With the exception of the very early flowering Cornelian cherry, most species of dogwood have their heyday between May and June.
The various flower dogwoods are especially lush
In particular, the flower or blossom dogwood enjoy great popularity with many gardeners. The actual flowers are quite inconspicuous, only the mostly white or yellow, up to five centimeters long bracts provide the interesting as well as eye-catching appearance.
American Flower Dogwood (Cornus florida)
The rather slow-growing Cornus florida is one of the early flowering plants and shows its, depending on the variety, white or pink flowers before the leaves.

The variety 'Rubra', which produces pink-white and up to 12 centimeters large flowers, is especially beautiful and lush. The foliage is variegated green and white. This variant blooms between May and June.
Japanese flower dogwood (Cornus kousa)
The Japanese flower dogwood shows its impressive flowers only from the end of May. The white, often pink-puffed flowers can grow up to nine centimeters in diameter.
Chinese flower dogwood (Cornus kousa var. Chinensis)
The longest flowering time is offered by the Chinese flower dogwood, which often displays its lush white flowers from the beginning of May until July.
Tips
If the dogwood does not want to flower, often only patience helps: The woody plants often only blossom at an advanced age between six and nine years.
