The hemp palm is hardy to -17 degrees
The hemp palm is hardy
Hemp palms are hardy and can therefore be pulled outdoors in our latitudes year-round. This only applies to palms that are older. Young plants are not hardy and must be wintered indoors or in a sheltered place on the terrace for the first few years.
Hemp palms can hibernate outside
Hemp palms come from the Chinese high mountains and therefore come with sub-zero temperatures wonderfully clear. Grown and planted in the garden bed in time hemp palms are hardy to minus 17 degrees. However, the leaves freeze if they are not protected from frost.
A hemp palm that you care for in the tub should also be hibernated outdoors. Then the temperatures should not fall below minus 6 degrees. With the right winter protection and in a protected location but makes a hemp palm in the bucket of winter little.
Plant out in time to the garden bed
An older hemp palm is so hardy that you can keep it in the garden bed all year round. However, it has to be planted already in the spring so that it can get used to its environment and develop sufficient root system.
Protect hemp palm in the field from frost and moisture
More than the cold makes a hemp palm in winter the wet to create. Therefore, put the palm in well-drained garden soil, then the rainwater can drain.
So that the leaves do not suffer frost damage, cover the hemp palm with burlap, garden fleece or other suitable materials. Above all, you should make sure that the heart of the palm is protected from moisture. As soon as the palm heart gets too wet, it freezes and the hemp palm comes in.
It also makes sense to protect the soil under the hemp palm with a mulch cover, especially in the first year.
Hemp palms in the bucket overwinter
Younger hemp palms should be kept in the bucket so that you can overwinter them outside. The bucket is placed in winter on a covered, somewhat protected place. It is important that rainwater or snow does not fall directly on the middle of the hemp palm.
Cover the planter with burlap, fir or garden fleece.
Cut off brown leaves after frost
If the hemp palm has brown leaves after winter, it is almost always frost damage. You can easily cut off these leaves. It then develop quite quickly new leaves.
Do not cut the leaves directly from the trunk, but leave remnants of the leaves four to six centimeters long. The remnants fade and provide the typical appearance of the palm trunk.
Tips
In summer, the ideal temperatures for hemp palms are between 15 and 20 degrees. When maintaining a hemp palm in the apartment, it should not be too warm. This is especially true for flower windows, where it can be very warm at lunchtime.
