Prevent frost damage to the hemp palm
Hemp palms are native to the Chinese high mountains. They are therefore able to cope with low temperatures. Nevertheless, frost damage can occur after very cold winters. These are usually not questionable, but can also be prevented.
Which frost damages can show up?
If brown leaves or leaf tips appear on the hemp palm after winter, it is certainly a frost damage. That is not worrying. Even though hemp palms can tolerate cold temperatures as low as minus 17 degrees, this does not apply to the leaves. They freeze when the temperature falls below minus six to ten degrees.
If the heart of the palm is frozen too, the frost damage can not be eliminated. In this case, the hemp palm will enter.
Cutting brown leaves after winter
The brown leaves of the hemp palm may be cut off in spring. Make sure that they are really brown and dry before you reach for the scissors.
Brown leaf tips cut with scissors if the sight bothers you very much. Often, however, the interfaces will later turn brown.
If you remove the leaves, always leave a leaf residue of four to six centimeters. Do not shorten the leaf directly on the trunk.
Prevent frost damage to hemp palms
Frost damage to the hemp palm can be prevented by planting the palm tree in a sheltered place in the garden or by placing the tub in a suitable location on the patio or balcony.
In an unprotected outdoor location, you should spread a mulch cover of leaves or straw under the palm tree.
Cover the palm with burlap, coco mat or similar materials to protect the leaves from severe frosts.
Prevent frost damage due to moisture
More than cold winterly wetness ensures frost damage to hemp palms. Cover the palm heart so that it is not exposed to moisture too much.
Hemp palms in the tub are better placed on a slightly covered place.
Tips
Hemp palms are hardy to minus 17 degrees. When wintering in the tub, the temperatures should not fall below minus six degrees. Alternatively, you can also overwinter the hemp palm in the apartment.
