As we said in our first article, the cutting of the garden shrubs is also in progress in February and usually a considerable amount of twigs and branches come together, which are basically too good to end up in the landfill. So a shredder has to come here, who shreds the cut waste and all other bulky plant residues in a composter-friendly manner. Expenses for fertilizer and humus soil can be saved, but high-quality shredders certainly have their price and are not very popular even with noise-sensitive neighbors.
The last official comparison, which for garden owners very useful as well as popular devices by the foundation "goods test" is already seven years back. All the more gratifying that now the editors of "my beautiful garden" in the current issue of February with a representative selection of current shredders of this subject has once again accepted.
Much has become better with the shredders
In contrast to the usual tests, the eight evaluated devices were not sent to the laboratory for sonic examinations. Practical, true gardeners put them to the acid test using the most common types of clippings and in real conditions. Also a novelty: The results of the comparison test are not only available to paying readers of the garden magazine mentioned above, they are (even more detailed than in the issue) also published on the online portal. It is particularly pleasing that in comparison to the tests of 2019 and 2019, the occupational safety has improved significantly and at least no acute noise levels are being created in the case of small wood making.
The "downside": While good forage harvesters 2019 were still to be had for the price of 99, - Euro, currently has to be used significantly deeper into the purse. The price range in today's, but undoubtedly more powerful brand choppers currently starts at just under 200, - Euro and extends to 1.200, - for professional equipment. By the way, shredding branches with a thickness of 40 to 45 mm is no problem for both types of shredders.
Loud or soft with roller or knife?
Since the quieter roller chopper work on average only around 50 rpm, the working noise with about 90 dB while unmistakable, but still moderate. The devices, which are very noisy with 100 to 110 dB and which shred the clippings with a rotating knife and reach speeds of at least 1,000 rpm, process the branches and branches much faster and finer. Thus, the purchasing decision probably depends largely on the amount of garden waste accumulated over the year for most allotment gardeners. Therefore, we recommend that interested parties, especially the last part of the review read carefully, because with an average garden or land size between 500 to 5,000 square meters shredders usually run for a maximum of two days a year. At least once a year we gardeners have a common problem that can be just as complicated.
