Is my rubber tree poisonous?
If you have pets or small children, choosing a houseplant is a tricky business. Many green plants are more or less poisonous, but few pose a serious threat to your family's life.
The easy-care rubber tree belongs to the slightly poisonous plants, both for humans and for pets. If possible, choose the location so that the rubber tree is not accessible to your cat or to your toddler.
How do I notice a poisoning with my child?
A poisoning by the gum tree is usually expressed by gastrointestinal upsets such as nausea and vomiting. Later, diarrhea can also happen. When eating a large quantity, cramps or paralysis occur. However, this rarely happens because the leaves of the rubber tree do not taste good. Most of the time children instinctively spit out the chewed again.
If you have the suspicion that your child has bitten a leaf of the rubber tree, then give him plenty to drink to dilute the toxins. The most suitable are lukewarm drinks such as tea or water. Under no circumstances should you give him milk or provoke vomiting. This would only additionally irritate the esophageal mucosa. On the skin, the milk-like sap may cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction.
