Replacing the grave fork handle: A guide

The stem of a grave fork can become brittle over time and burst. Fortunately, changing the style of a spade fork is not difficult at all. Learn more about how to replace the grave fork handle step by step.

Repair or buy your grave fork?

A new digging fork cost between 19 and 75 €. A new stem for a spade fork costs only 10 to 15 €. So, if you already own a high-quality digging fork, it's usually worthwhile re-imagining it. The time and effort is minimal. In just ten minutes, you can exchange your grave fork stem.

Step by step replace the handle of the grave fork

1. Measure the grave fork

Before you buy a new stem, you should measure the grave fork head. To do this, remove the remaining stalk (explained in the next step) and then measure the diameter of the opening into which the stalk enters. When buying, make sure that the new stem is the same size. You should also pay attention to the length. It is best to measure the old stem and buy a stalk of the same length.

2. Remove old stem

Remove screws or nails that secure the stem to the metal head. Pliers can be of great help here if the nails are already a bit rusty.

Since the stalk is usually so stuck that you can hardly remove it by hand, turn the grave fork over and hit the outward-looking end of the stalk with the narrow side of the hammer (the so-called "fin").

3. Insert new stem

Make sure you mount the digging fork in the right direction. The stem is slightly bent, the bending must point to the rear.

Put the grave fork on the handle and hit it hard on the ground several times, so that the handle slides well into the opening.

4. Fix new stem

Finally fix the new stem with a screw or one or more nails in the opening provided on the spade fork.

Tips

Store your digger fork in a dry place so that the stem will last longer.
