Only in areas in which no strong frosts are to be expected, does the planting of the gladiolus fall into autumn. In cooler areas, it is better to plant the gladioli in May or June. The shoot of the gladiolus is very sensitive to frost, so please be aware of the climatic conditions of your region.

Which location do gladioli prefer?

Gladioli are sun worshipers and need a full sun in the flowerbed. In addition, you should make sure that the site is protected from the wind, so that the upright awake flower stalks are not disheveled or bent over the wind.

The flowering time of the gladiolus falls in the midsummer and extends from July into October. In regions with a particularly mild climate, gladiolas sometimes start to flower in May.

For this purpose, you can put the flower bulbs two-thirds in commercially available potting soil and leave them in a warm place. The onions are also willing to drive when they are simply placed on the ground and regularly watered.

Since gladiolus bulbs would freeze to death in our latitudes during the cold season, the bulbs must be dug up in the fall anyway and stored in a cool but frost-free room during the winter. Next spring you do not have to put the onions in the place of the previous year, but you can plant the gladioli in a different place every year. This is even advisable because the heavy-eating gladioli can leach the floor.

How can gladioli be propagated themselves?

Gladiolas can be multiplied by seed, the separation of foothills and daughter onions. The easiest way is to carefully separate the small broilers in the autumn after digging from the onion. However, use only the larger daughter onions for further cultivation as these are the strongest. A little patience is needed for this type of propagation, as the onions only blossom after two to three years.

Gladioli thrive particularly well in the vicinity of the summer phlox and other perennials that thrive in mid-summer. These imposing flowering plants take something of the austerity of the gladiolus.
