How to design a vegetable garden for children
Watching only the parents digging, cultivating, sowing, weeding and harvesting can be pretty boring in the long term. Most children are very enthusiastic about gardening, as long as they have their own bed for sowing and harvesting.
Plan the children's bed
But before mom and dad set about setting up a patch of garden soil for the offspring, some energy must first be put into the planning - even for children's beds applies that can only harvest who has made appropriate provision. This not only concerns the selection of the right location, but also the treatment of the soil (which should be improved if necessary), the choice of plants for children, etc.
Location and size
So also applies to a children's bed: vegetables if possible in a full sun with a humus rich, well drained soil pull. Parents should not make the mistake of leaving their children with an unfit piece of land; assuming that nothing would come of it anyway. The opposite is the case, because if the plants do not grow as hoped, the little ones are quickly frustrated and give up. Keep in mind that children have shorter arms and the beds should therefore be much narrower than usual. Only then will the little ones themselves arrive everywhere and can garden like the grown-ups.
Ideal for small people: a high or desk bed
Instead of a conventional flat bed, high or table beds matched to children's sizes are also wonderfully suited to bringing the gardener closer to the offspring. The optimal raised bed for (older) children is between 80 and 100 centimeters high and no more than 100 centimeters wide - of course, smaller children also need smaller and lower beds.
Suitable plants for the Naschbeet of the offspring
The smaller the child, the faster a garden has to deliver success (read: fruits). For children, fast growing fruit and vegetable plants are very well suited, which are also robust and can be eaten right on the spot. Ideal vegetables for children include:
But also pumpkins and melons, physalis, berry bushes (raspberries, currants, gooseberries) and strawberries are ideal for small children's hands.
Tips
Do not talk too much to your children when planning and caring for the garden, but only give advice and, if necessary, help - the important decisions are made by the children themselves. If only the adults decide, it is rather demotivating and the little ones lose fast the desire - Mama makes everything alone anyway.
