Metal garden furniture can withstand cold winters better than those made of plastic

Winterize garden furniture

Even if many garden furniture is advertised as weather-resistant and winter-proof, you should not necessarily rely on it. Which garden furniture may be left outside in winter and how do you make it winterproof?

Not all garden furniture is winterproof

Plastic garden furniture should never be left outside in winter. The material becomes brittle during frost and jumps under load. In addition, the color suffers from the harsh climate.

Wooden furniture is weather resistant. But they survive a cold, damp winter only if you protect them accordingly. If you have enough space, you should bring it to the house for safety's sake. Then you have more pleasure in the often expensive garden furniture.

However, some garden furniture such as garden loungers or beach chairs are far too heavy and large to bring them into the house. You must therefore spend the winter outdoors.

Winterize garden furniture

To winterize garden furniture, you should thoroughly clean it in the fall. Remove dust and dirt particles by sweeping the furniture with a brush and, if necessary, wiping it with a damp cloth.

Whenever possible, move the garden furniture to a place where it is not exposed to cold and moisture. To keep the furniture from getting too moist from below, place wooden planks, wooden pallets or stones under them so that they stand slightly raised.

Cover with protective covers

For almost all garden furniture, there are corresponding protective covers, which you can purchase in the garden market. But it usually also does a waterproof cover made of foil, which you spread over the dry furniture. Fix them down with stones so that they are not stripped off by the wind.

On dry days you should leave the covers for some time to air the garden furniture. This allows moisture to escape and prevent the wood from becoming moldy.

It goes without saying that cushions and upholstery made of fabrics have to be stored in the house in winter.

Tips

After the winter you have to refresh most of the garden furniture. Clean it carefully. Wooden furniture should be impregnated in spring to make it more resistant.
