Can you drill a garden fountain yourself?

Nobody is allowed to build a well in his garden and tap into the groundwater. In most German communities, such a must at least registered, if not approved. The regulations are very different in Germany: some communities allow wells without any restrictions, in others may be drilled only to a maximum depth and again other localities limit the amount of water to be removed and their intended use. Furthermore, it is important to decide on a well type. Basically, two types are distinguished: The so-called piling or blowing well is to be built by laymen on their own. This is basically just a metal tube that is knocked into the ground. At the lower end there is a filter, through which the water flows into the pipe and is conveyed upwards by a pump. A serious disadvantage of this type of well is the fact that the maximum flow is very low - and can also be drilled to a depth of no more than eight meters. If the expected water consumption is higher or if the groundwater level is lower, then a well is better suited.

To build one, however, requires a great deal of expertise as well as manual skills. For this reason, many gardeners may be better off drilling through a well-skilled well builder. The costs for this are within a manageable range: usually the professional estimates a price in the upper three-digit to lower four-digit range, but brings with it the necessary materials, tools and machinery.
