Laying cables for garden lighting - How to do it right
The year-round power supply of your garden lighting succeeds safely and reliably with the help of underground cables. Thanks to a strong insulation, the cables are protected against adverse weather conditions and do not pose a risk of tripping, such as seasonal extension cords. This manual explains step by step how to professionally lay a power cord in the garden.
Material, tools and preparations
A detailed planning ensures that later in the right places are electrical connections for your garden lighting. We recommend laying the cables in conduits for greater safety. Moreover, you can easily retrieve additional cables here. The following materials and tools are needed:
Important: Please check before installation if you have followed all safety regulations. For example, all components for cable laying should be assigned protection class IP 44 or higher.
Instructions for cable installation
Mark in advance the course of the cable with strings, which you stretch between wood bars. Ideally, you will need to go back to the specific positions of the garden lamps before you start the earthworks. This is how you proceed expertly:
The underground cable in the empty pipe first cover with another 10 cm thick layer of sand. Embedded in the protective tube and the sand layer, the cable is perfectly protected against the weather and earth movements. If you are not using ducts, cover the ground cable with cable shields instead before filling the sand. Over the sand layer, spread a portion of the excavation to create a flat surface.
Finally, mark the position of the power cord with narrow warning bands. This safety measure can be vital if you do earthmoving in the garden.
Tips
Is cable laying in a far-off corner of the garden uneconomic? Then make your garden lighting without further ado independent of a power supply from the net. This is easy and inexpensive with solar lights, lanterns or battery-operated fairy lights.
