If you have laid out your cold frame correctly, the planting season starts here in early spring. Above all, under the protected conditions, vegetables grow, which are already tough and have adapted to low temperatures. Tips for the second half of the year - that comes into the cold frame
When the mercury column falls in September, the cold frame gets its transparent lid again. Salads of all kinds and radishes thrive well into autumn. Classic winter vegetables can be sown until the end of September to provide the kitchen with fresh vitamins during the winter. High on the list are leek and kale.
Incidentally, the cold frame is excellent during the cold season to store the autumn harvest here. On a thick layer of straw, apples, potatoes and many vegetables remain fresh. Regular airing ensures the important air exchange, so that no mold forms. A cover made of opaque fleece creates the necessary darkness for a long storage time.
Tips
In the sunny, sheltered location, the spring sun brings the cold frame to working temperature from mid / end of March. If you would like to sow and plant in February, you can equip the mini-greenhouse with natural heating. This consists of a 20 cm thick layer of fresh horse manure and a likewise 20 cm thick layer of compost soil.
