How to properly fill a cold frame - Instructions for practitioners

With a cold frame, the windowsill is finally freed from countless seed pots for plant cultivation. You can build the practical box in the garden yourself and use it already in early spring for the cultivation of ornamental and useful plants. The right filling ensures a pleasant warmth without electricity. How to do it, learn here.

Prepare warming filling - that's how it works

The particular advantage of a cold frame is a natural heat development. Here, seeds can germinate and young plants thrive when there is still snow in the garden. The natural heating results from the following filling:

The horse manure has the task of developing heat due to its decomposition. This rises in the compost soil to revitalize the soil organisms there. Seedlings and young plants benefit from this interaction, as they already thrive when the garden is still in deep hibernation.

Filling a cold frame - that's how you do it right

The prepared fillings are ready to hand at the intended location for the cold frame. This is how you proceed step by step:

Fill the horse manure on the base to a height of 20 cm. This is followed by the prepared mixture of garden soil and compost, which also forms a 20 cm thick layer. Unless you want to remove the beetroot from other parts of the garden, you can of course use the excavation for the filling.

Renew filling every year

Its function as a natural heat supplier fulfills the content in the cold frame only for one season. In order to reap the benefits next year, dig out the filling in autumn and fill the pit with fresh horse manure in spring. You can reuse the decomposed organic material for nutrient supply in the ornamental and vegetable garden.

Tips

Give the finished cold frame one week to develop sufficient heat under the closed cover. Only then can you sow seeds or plant the plants in the ground. Please note that the filling needs to be renewed every year for natural heating to work.
