The Frog Spoon - a short profile
The frog spoon is a marsh and aquatic plant that grows perennial and herbaceous. It often forms rhizomes, which makes them easy to multiply, or root tubers. The flower color is mostly white to pink.
Actually plant genus and not individual plant
Behind the name frog spoon hides a whole plant genus with about eight different species, not just an individual plant. They are all native to wetlands in the temperate to subtropical zone and belong to the family of frogspoon plants. Some of these species are for example the Lanzettblättrige, the Grasblättrige and the round-leaved Frozen spoon, but also the ordinary Frozen spoon.
The ordinary frog spoon
The common frog spoon is relatively widespread and is about 20 - 90 cm high. He likes to grow in sunny locations and shallow waters. The flowering period is in July and August. The milk juice of the ordinary frog spoon has a skin irritating and blistering effect, and the tuber is also poisonous. For grazing livestock, consumption usually ends fatally, except for goats. By drying the toxic substances are degraded, however. Nevertheless, it is strongly advised against eating.
The lancet-leafed frog spoon
The lanceolate frog spoon is similar to the common frog spoon, is occasionally confused with this. But it forms a more compact and less expansive inflorescence and is much rarer to find than the common frog spoon. He opens his flowers in the morning and not for lunch. Its flowering time ranges from May to September depending on the location.
Where does the frog spoon feel good?
The frog spoon loves pond edges and stream banks with a water depth of about 10 - 50 cm and the full sun. He also likes a nutrient-rich soil. If these requirements are met, then it is easy to care for and blooms generously.
Wherever he likes it, however, he also spreads quite generously. This can only be prevented by a courageous pruning. You should not necessarily let the seed stalls stand, because the frog spoon is quite easy to put on.
