Many gardeners are surprised that their forsythia does not flower in spring. Often, a pruning of the shrub in the fall is responsible. Do not cut forsythia in autumn, wait until after flowering next spring.
Forsythia does not cut in the fall
Hobby gardeners who winterize the garden like to grab the scissors and cut all the trees and shrubs in the garden. In forsythia - whether planted as a single plant, high trunk or hedge, this is not advisable.
If you want a rich flowering, autumn is a bad time to cut.
Forsythia flourish at the previous year's competitions
To know when forsythia is best cut, take a look at the profile of the bush. Forsythia belongs to the mesotonen plants.
Mesoton means that new shoots mainly grow out of the middle. They initially grow very straight up. Most flowers develop on shoots that have grown in the previous year.
With a strong pruning in the fall you remove exactly the branches, which would bloom in the next year. Therefore, it is not recommended to cut forsythia in the fall.
What can you cut in the fall?
A strong pruning should be done in spring immediately after flowering.
If you prune your forsythia in the fall, remove only shoots that are dead or sick.
Of course, you may also cut off protruding branches or shoot out very old shoots. But keep in mind that with each cut you reduce the flowers of the next year.
Make a rejuvenation cut in the winter
Every two to three years you should rejuvenate your forsythia. All lignified shoots are sawed off shortly above the ground and cut the branched branches in the shrub crown.
You can do this work in the fall if necessary. But even for this there are better times, such as the winter or the early spring.
Tips & Tricks
Even if you cut your forsythia at the wrong time, it does not matter. The shrub will bloom only rarely or not at all in the following year. It then takes a year to develop new flowering branches.
