Flaming Katie - harmless to humans, poisonous to cats
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana or Flaming Käthchen is a succulent thick-leafed plant that offers a multitude of colorful blossoms during the dark season and therefore is a cultivated indoor plant - the red or orange, four-petalled flowers make for a little happiness in the light-poor time. Like so many other attractive indoor plants, the Flaming Katy is poisonous - but only for cats, because for humans the plant is completely harmless.

According to information from the information center against poisoning at the University Hospital of Bonn, the ingredients of Kalanchoe are largely (yet) unexplored and therefore unknown. Poisoning symptoms in humans, big or small, are extremely rare. For this reason, the plant, originally from tropical East Africa, is considered to be non-toxic, at least to humans, and therefore harmless. Only very rarely have poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain been described after consuming large amounts of parts of plants. However, the Flaming Katy is also not considered food, so you should better refrain from the enjoyment of leaves and flowers.
Cat owners should do without flaming Katy
However, for cats, Flaming Katie is highly toxic due to the presence of a steroid and can cause severe symptoms of poisoning and even death if the stub tiger frequently nibbles at it. As a cat owner, you should better not assume that your fur friend will already know what he gets or not - cats can actually estimate this and nibble with preference also on plants toxic to them. Therefore, you better refrain from a flaming Käthchen or ensure that your cat will certainly not come.
Tips
Also watch out for outdoor animals on possible poison plants in the garden or with the neighbors: Especially the Flammende Käthchen is placed during the summer months also outdoors or planted in the garden.
