Put Ficus benjamina outside - When and how long?
The birch fig is at its best when it can enjoy the natural light conditions outdoors. In the morning or evening mild sunbeams caress the pretty leaves, which promotes a harmonious growth without being spoiled. Temperature gives the start signal for outside
Due to its tropical origin, the birch fig is not familiar with winter conditions. Even at temperatures below 16 degrees Celsius shiver the evergreen rainforest plants. This applies equally to green and variegated Benjamini species. Outdoors, a Ficus benjamina should therefore only be present under the following conditions:
In our latitudes the window is open for outdoor living from mid-May to mid-September. The final start signal for the change outside is not the calendar, but the thermometer. Since no one likes to get up at night to check the nightly temperatures, a minimum-maximum thermometer acts as a handy tool. Properly adjusted, the device shows the next morning how cold it was the night before.
Yellow leaves signal sunburn
The desire of a birch fig after bright light conditions is a tightrope walk for the siting outdoors. If your Benjamini is under direct sunlight at lunchtime, the evergreen leaves will suffer a sunburn.
The damage comes in the form of light brown to yellow spots with a brown border. Please change the birch fig to a partially shaded spot immediately or provide shade during the critical noon hours. Unless you feel disturbed by the stained leaves, please do not cut them off. The green tissues are still involved in vital photosynthesis.
Tips
As a bonsai, your ficus benjamina will feel especially good outdoors, as long as the temperature does not fall below the minimum of 16 degrees Celsius. Since your miniature birch fig is already under water during the slightest downpour, please select a spot under the canopy or an awning.
