With about 420 members, the family of fat hens (Sedum), sometimes called stonecrop, is one of the most species-rich in the thick-leaf family. Many Fetthennen species are hardy, cultivated as houseplants varieties also need a winter break.
Winter hardy hens hibernate outdoors
Many types and varieties of fat hen are considered hardy and can hibernate easily in the garden. As soon as the first frost sets in, the supernatural shoots die off and slowly dry up. In spring, you can just cut off the brown discolored branches just above the ground, the perennial plant expands again.
Overheat fat hen in the apartment
However, fethnuts cultivated as houseplants are somewhat more difficult to handle in terms of wintering because the plants should also take a three-month winter break. The stonecrop is wintered at temperatures between five and twelve degrees Celsius cool, but frost-free and in a bright location.
Tips
Caution is especially advised for the tall Sedum species as well as for different varieties of Sedum linear and Sedum lydium, because these fat hens are usually not hardy.
