Drying fennel herb - that's how you do it right

Fennelkraut is a welcome guest in the kitchen. It enhances especially teas, but also salads. Hobby cooks and connoisseurs appreciate the herb in particular because of its spasmose effect. But what to do with larger amounts of fennel herb? Does it dry out? And if so, how exactly does it work? We have the answers!

Fennel air dry? No!

Unlike most other herbs, fennel herb does not tolerate air drying too well. Practical experiments show that fennel green only turns brown and unsightly. Therefore, we advise against binding fennel to small bouquets and hanging upside down in a dry, airy place, as you can do with a good conscience in a large part of the other herbs.

To dry fennel in the oven? Yes!

Luckily you are not dependent on air drying. You can, for example, fall back on the oven. That's how it's done:

Lay out a baking tray with baking paper. Spread the fennel herb evenly on the plate. Then put the tin in the preheated oven. Let the cabbage dry at about 40 degrees Celsius with the oven door slightly open.

Tips:

Dry fennel in the dehydrator? Yes!

Even better than the oven is a dehydrator for drying fennel herb. If you have such a device, you should prefer it to the oven. Again, do not use temperatures higher than 40 degrees Celsius!

Due to the fast but gentle drying in the dehydrator, fennel leaves remain juicy green and therefore tasty and attractive.

Tips

The concrete procedure can be found in the manufacturer's instructions in the manual of your Dehydrator.

Alternative preservation option: freezing

If you do not want to dry your fennel herb, there is another method available: you can freeze it.

Wash the fennel herb thoroughly. Dry it off carefully. Chop the herb small. Portion the shredded herb into ice cube trays. Fill the ice cube trays with water. Put the whole thing in the freezer. Divide the fennel herb cubes into freezer bags. Seal these bags airtight. Store the freezer bags in the freezer.

Tips

So you can always bring out the fennel herb in portions, if you need them.
