When is the best time to share?
The best time to share a fern came in the spring. Just before the new fronds sprout, the fern should have been dug, split and planted. This is especially true for sensitive specimens. More robust varieties can also be shared in the fall.
Preparation of the soil
Before you tackle sharing, you should prepare everything to immediately place the split ferns in the ground. Above all, this requires good soil preparation at the new location.

Now the selected fern can be shared. First, he is carefully excavated with a spade or a digger fork. Dig in a respectful distance to the rhizomes rather than too close to avoid injury!
Now lift the plant out and shake coarse soil off the roots. The rhizome should be exposed and well visible. The rhizome is shared with a knife or a spade. It is best if each section has at least 2 fronds.

The cuts are placed immediately in the prepared planting holes or alternatively in pots to use. Water the root area well. Also in the next weeks it is important not to forget the casting. To grow properly, a fern needs a lot of moisture. He can also be mulched.
Tips & Tricks
Not all ferns are easy to share. Choose only specimens that are already big and strong enough. For the other specimens use a different propagation method.
