Elder fan maple seeds after flowering
To grow a fan maple needs patience and care
If you look around in various gardener forums, so many hobby gardeners complain about lack of success in attempted cuttings or seed propagation of the Japanese fan maple. In fact, Acer palmatum is sometimes a bit complicated in both vegetative and seed multiplication, but with the right tricks, the project can succeed here as well. Incidentally, red maple is considered particularly difficult to propagate - we'll show you how it can still succeed.
Propagation by seeds
Older Japanese fan maple flowers annually between May and June. From these often red flower clusters develop in autumn the winged, seed contained nutlets. Of course, these can also be used to propagate the ornamental plant, although they must be stratified - after all, the fan maple is a cold germ. In addition, patience is needed, because an increase in seeds can take up to one to two years to germination. The easiest way is therefore to sow the seeds in the autumn directly into the open and wait.
Alternatively, you can proceed as follows:
Purchased seeds are usually already stratified.
Vegetative types of propagation
Since you basically produce clones of the parent plant in the vegetative propagation, it should be as strong and healthy as possible - their offspring will take over all their positive and negative characteristics.
Stecklingsvermehrung
Japanese maple can be propagated via cuttings in the following way:
Abmoosen
The Abmoosen is often performed by experienced lovers of Japanese bonsai art propagation, but needs especially for the sensitive Japanese fanatics a lot of tact and experience. In the process, the so-called ring technique - whereby the widest possible strip of bark is removed - has proven to be the best.
Tips
Instead of rooting powders, cuttings from the Japanese fan maple can also be used for home-made pasture water.
