The Abelie is not completely hardy
Belonging to the honeysuckle family Abelie enchants with its many fragrant flowers so many garden and park. Most varieties of the evergreen Abelie, however, are only partially hardy. The shrub should therefore be pulled better in rough layers in the bucket.
Too low temperatures does not tolerate the Abelie
With temperatures as low as minus 12 degrees, the Abelie and her large-flowered sister Abelia grandiflora can cope - provided the shrubs are in a sheltered location and it is frost-free for at least three weeks outside.
If you maintain your garden in a mild climate, you can safely plant the shrubs in the field.
In harsh locations or if there is no favorable location, you prefer to pull Abelias in a bucket. Then you can easily overwinter the shrubs in a sheltered spot on the terrace or in the cool conservatory.
Plant outdoors on house walls or in protected locations
Plant Abelias in the open air along walls or house walls, because they are protected from the wind and the temperatures are usually not quite as strong.
So hibernate Abelias in the field
On a winter protection you should not do without the only hardy shrubs. Especially in the first year after planting Abelias need a particularly good winter protection.
Cover the ground with a thick mulch cover made of leaves, mature compost or other organic materials.
The above-ground shrub parts protect you from frost with suitable materials:
Hibernate Abelie in the bucket
In harsh situations or to be on the safe side, it is better to plant Abelias in a bucket. You can then cultivate the shrubs outside from spring to autumn. In late autumn, set the tubs frost-free and bright in the cool conservatory.
Pour the shrubs moderately but regularly and inspect the abelias regularly for pests. Fertilizing is not necessary in winter.
In the spring, you pick the Abelias out of the winter quarters, put them in larger pots and slowly get them back into the fresh air.
Tips
Abelias need moisture even in winter. Occasionally sprinkle the shrubs when the top layer of soil has dried and not frozen for at least three days.
