Elseberry trees are one of the slow-growing deciduous trees
For up to one hundred years, the trees can grow old. As they grow slowly, they form quite solid wood. Over time, the treetop becomes very expansive and bears many leaves that turn bright red in the autumn and later yellow.

It takes time for an elder to grow up. Only at the age of about 20 years do the trees bear significant amounts of cranberry fruits for the first time, if they grow in a suitable location.
Hobby gardeners should therefore use early, larger specimens from the nursery for planting in the garden.

The wood of the berry trees is very popular because of its rare occurrence. It is the most expensive domestic wood ever. Because of its medium-hard structure and its reddish color, it is particularly suitable for music and instrument making.
