Sowing vervain - in the pot and in the field

Verbena is considered undemanding. Nevertheless, the seeds should not simply be scattered in passing in the garden or in the balcony box and left to themselves. Then you can hope and wait long for success ...

The right time for sowing

The verbena can be sown outdoors from the end of April until mid-June. If you want to prefer it on the windowsill, you can start it from February and until April at the latest.

Pre-culture: from seed to seedling

If you have procured the seeds, follow these steps:

In the field, when sowing or when pecking you should pay attention to a distance of 25 to 30 cm between the individual Verbena plants. If the verbena is to grow in the pot, it should be deep enough, as the plant forms long roots.

Then: the right choice of location

After the Eisheiligen in May, the verbena can be planted or relocated to the balcony. The choice should be placed on a sunny spot. Alternatively, a partially shaded location can be selected. But beware: the sunnier, the bigger and more flowering the verbena becomes. Generally, the place should be located in a wind-sheltered location.

In order to keep the subsequent care effort low, it is advisable to pay attention to the substrate. The soil should be well drained, so that no waterlogging can form. Also advantageous is a lean to moderately nutrient-rich and humus-rich substrate with a dry to moist environment.

Tips & Tricks

As soon as the vervain plants have reached a height of 8 cm, you should chip them off. As a result, they branch out better.
