The evergreen leaf (Spathiphyllum) is a popular houseplant. It belongs to the family of the arum family (Araceae) and, like all plants belonging to this plant family, is poisonous both to humans and to animals. Especially cats are endangered, as they like to nibble on the large, dark green leaves.
The dose makes the poison
Especially the leaves and stems of the plant contain poisonous oxalic acid as well as calcium oxalate. Now, there are certainly cats that nibble on the single leaf every now and then and show no symptoms. However, this is not because the animals are about immune to the toxins. Instead, they probably just did not consume so much of the toxic green that the substances in question did not take effect. As is often the case here, the dose makes the poison - the single-leaf is therefore considered to be slightly toxic.
What complaints indicate poisoning?
Nevertheless, it is a good idea to put away the single leaf for the cat inaccessible - for example hanging from the ceiling as a traffic light plant or in a room to which the pet does not have access (and actually does not enter there!). There is a whole range of equally beautiful, but non-toxic indoor plants. Therefore, give preference to Chamaedorea elegans (mountain palm), Crassula (thick-leaf, money tree), Chlorophytum comosum (green lily) or Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm tree).
