Yew disease - recognize and treat
Usually, yews do not get sick so quickly. The robust native tree can cope with almost all weather conditions and location. However, illness sometimes occurs when site or nursing errors are made. Which diseases can occur?
Abnormalities indicate diseases of the yew
Most likely you recognize a disease of your yew on the discoloration of the needles. These become light, yellow or brown, soften or even fall off. Sometimes they look crippled too.
As soon as you notice changes to the needles, you should examine the tree for diseases or pests.
Which diseases and pests can occur?
Mostly care mistakes
Root rot and fungal attacks almost always indicate an unfavorable location and care mistakes. The soil is too moist, so that waterlogging arises. The tree gets too little nutrients or is too close to other plants.
When planting, make sure that the soil is permeable to water. If necessary, apply drainage. Improve the soil with mature compost, horn shavings or lime.
Protect young trees from too strong sunlight even in winter.
Fungus infestation is difficult to treat
If the yew is attacked by fungi, you can do little. Heavily infected trees must be dug up and disposed of. If the fungal attack is not too strong, it may help to cut off all branches and also pick up the needles. Dispose of the plant parts carefully.
Diseases caused by pests
Most of the yew is the Schildlaus to create. It is difficult to fight. Break ants roads and use biological pest control such as parasitic wasps.
The black-eared weevil, which hides in the ground, eats the needles and digs aisles into the trunk. Against him you can use nematodes, which consume the larvae from the inside.
Gall wasps are not that bad. They cause crippling of the needles and form small round bumps on the branches. Cut off affected branches generously and dispose of them with household waste.
Tips
Choose a favorable location for your yew from the beginning. Waterlogging is absolutely harmful. Young trees do not like too much direct sunlight.
