Fertilize yew - when, how and with what?
As a native tree, the yew is perfectly adapted to the local weather and soil conditions. She gets along well with little nutrients. Fertilization is therefore not absolutely necessary. Only if you want to accelerate the growth, fertilization is recommended. When, how and with what do you fertilize a yew at its best?
When does it make sense to fertilize a yew?
Yews are deep rooters that form a very fine root system. They therefore provide themselves largely with nutrients as soon as the trees are big enough. In order to accelerate growth or to loosen up dense soils, however, fertilization can make sense.
Which fertilizers are suitable?
There are a number of fertilizers that are suitable for yew trees:
If you buy long-term fertilizer in the specialized trade, you fall back on special yew manure. This is not absolutely necessary, natural fertilizers such as garden remnants are equally well suited and much cheaper!
Mulch soil!
The best way to provide a yew with a lot of nutrients and to ensure a loose texture of the soil, is the mulching. For this you bring down fallen leaves, grass clippings (without seeds!) Or other garden waste under the trees.
Make sure the foliage is from healthy trees.
The mulch material decomposes over time, releasing nutrients that penetrate the soil. At the same time, applying a mulch blanket prevents other unwanted plants from spreading under the trees.
The right time to fertilize yews
If you want to do something good for your yew, provide it with some compost every spring just before the new shoot. This is spread and worked with a rake easily into the ground.
Long-term fertilizer is also given in spring. It is spread or poured according to instructions on the packaging. This also applies if you use natural fertilizers such as manure or horn shavings for fertilization.
A mulch cover can be applied at any time whenever garden waste is generated. Ideally, renew it every spring.
Improve soil before planting
Even before planting, the soil can be enriched with sufficient nutrients, so you will hardly have to fertilize later.
Loosen the soil well and remove stones and thickening. Yews are not demanding, but do not like waterlogging. Mix ripe compost or a few horn shavings under the garden soil and then plant the yew.
Tips
Even if the yew is a highly poisonous tree, you can compost cut branches and needles with care. The contained taxin is decomposed by bacteria, so there is no danger. You should, however, shred the cut remnants as soon as possible, so that the rotting process runs faster.
